Deep Blue Elegance with Practical Purpose

A characterful contemporary shaker kitchen balancing style, storage, and family-focused functionality.

About The Customer

Ruth Osbourne approached Grand Design Kitchens & Bedrooms with a clear vision — she wanted a kitchen that was bold yet timeless, deeply practical yet stunningly refined. With her family at the heart of the home, the kitchen needed to perform on all fronts: storage, durability, beauty, and usability. The previous kitchen felt dated and uninspired, offering neither the layout nor efficiency she needed.

The Challenge

Before the renovation, Ruth’s kitchen felt closed-in, outdated, and disconnected from how her family actually used the space. Several key issues were holding the kitchen back:

  • Cramped layout: The kitchen’s original footprint was tight and lacked flow — work zones overlapped and created unnecessary traffic bottlenecks.
  • Poor appliance positioning: The oven, hob, and sink were scattered in a way that disrupted cooking rhythm, with limited prep space on either side.
  • Outdated style: The finishes and materials were worn and visually tired, no longer reflecting Ruth’s personal taste or the upgraded feel of the rest of the house.
  • Inadequate storage: Cupboards were overfilled, and there was no dedicated space for dry goods, baking supplies, or the family’s growing collection of appliances.
  • Dark and underlit: Key areas, like the sink and cooking zones, lacked proper lighting, making the space feel dim and less inviting.
  • No casual seating or island: There was nowhere to perch with a morning coffee or for kids to do homework while meals were being prepared — family life was spilling into other rooms.

The Solution

To meet Ruth’s goals, we created a kitchen that balances style, warmth, and day-to-day practicality. Key elements included:

  • Navy blue contemporary Shaker cabinetry, offering timeless structure with modern depth and texture.
  • Copper bar handles for a warm metallic accent that ties into the tap and sink.
  • Thick veined quartz worktops and splashback, with waterfall ends adding sculptural elegance and durability.
  • A central island workstation with deep drawers, integrated storage, and bar stool seating — now the heart of the home.
  • Concealed pantry storage with oak-effect shelving behind tall cabinet doors for clutter-free organisation.
  • Oversized copper sink positioned beneath a bright window, offering style and function in equal measure.
  • Layered lighting including pendant lights, recessed ceiling spots, and undercabinet LEDs for ambience and task use.
  • Fully integrated Neff appliances installed flush within tall cabinetry for a sleek, uninterrupted finish.
  • Porcelain oak-effect floor tiles, durable yet warm, laid in a natural staggered plank pattern for flow and comfort.
